‘’This…this is liberty!’’ - Ignatius Sancho

Ignatius! takes you on an extraordinary musical journey about one man's campaign to bring freedom and emancipation to Black people in Britain.

Son of an enslaved mother. Student of an English Duke. A trailblazer for his people.

A deeply resonant and defiant tale, IGNATIUS! follows the life of writer, composer, and abolitionist, Charles Ignatius Sancho, wonderfully told through original script and music. Born on a slave ship during the treacherous and inhumane “middle passage”, he was raised in Greenwich, and made history as the first African in Britain to vote in a British general election. His poignant and inspirational life story  legacy will be fittingly performed at Greenwich Park, the very lands the man walked in his lifetime.

Part of The Royal Park’s Greenwich Park Revealed project, Ignatius! has been created by award winning composer Nick Bicat, writer Tunde Euba and directed by Angela Ekaette Michaels, additional lyrics by Tony Bicat.
